Anatomically modern humans have been in existence for around 300,000 years and since then have diverged into diverse populations spanning the planet. However, all humans share around 99.9 percent of their DNA, meaning that you are overall approximately 99.9 percent genetically identical to every person on Earth. The 0.1 percent which is not identical is usually a result of genetic isolation and obstructions to population gene flow. Because of this, populations can be differentiated by examining genetic variations across populations which are termed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The genome has around 10 million SNPs but only a small amount are examined when taking a DNA test. Autosomal DNA testing used for ancestral analysis overall only examines around 0.1% of the genome and attempts to match it to worldwide reference populations on a percentage basis.

To determine individual admixture, customer data is compared to reference genotype sets. A reference data panel was created and population data has been sourced from the customer database (from individuals with a consistent history in particular regions), Human Genome Diversity Project, POPRES, 1000 Genomes, International HapMap Project, and the Estonian Biocentre Human Genome Diversity Panel. Samples which were not admixed were used as references, with outliers being removed from the data sets using a principal component analysis. The Admixture program was used to discern the variation between reference populations and to determine the ancestral backgrounds of selected individuals. Clusters were then delineated using this data and our reference panel was validated through testing against samples of confirmed origin.
